In a prior interview, Oprah explored the controversy and phenomenon of The Secret with Esther Hicks, an inspirational speaker and co-author of The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham. Now, Oprah welcomes Esther back to the show to talk about the practical and meaningful lessons behind the law of attraction, which states that like attracts like, and how to apply the principle to your life.
Esther is an expert on the law of attraction and says she has gained much of her wisdom by dialoguing with or “channeling” a group of spiritual teachers collectively known as “Abraham.” In explaining the law of attraction, Esther says that you have the power to attract that which you want into your life, such as love, money or good health. She also says there are ways to reverse the negativity and bad occurrences in your life.
Some critics of The Secret and the law of attraction have questioned how people can attract bad occurrences into their lives, and say that illness and violence are unfair, random occurrences over which we have no control. Esther challenges that statement and shares a story about how one woman—even one plagued with disease—can proactively work to improve her condition.
“A lady was talking to Abraham, and she said, ‘I’m in such pain, I have arthritis in my hips and every moment I feel uncomfortable. How can I think about a good-feeling body when my body hurts so much?’ And Abraham said, ‘You have to separate what’s happening from the way you feel about what’s happening. There’s the physical discomfort, but [either] you’re in a painful, arthritic body and you’re fearful or you’re in a painful, arthritic body and you’re hopeful.’”
Esther goes on to say that the goal in life is “utter well-being,” and that you must learn to allow your natural well-being to come forth. “To me, it’s the absence of anything that’s bothering me,” she says. “Utter well-being is just that feeling that everything is fine and all right. It’s a feeling of elation.”

Oprah continues her exploration of The Secret phenomenon with Esther Hicks, co-author of The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham. Esther is a best-selling author and an inspirational speaker who says she dialogues with or “channels” a group of spiritual teachers collectively known as “Abraham.” Esther refers to the material that she channels as “Abraham-Hicks.”
During the show, Oprah has the opportunity to talk to these spiritual teachers, or Abraham, as Esther channels their wisdom. Esther explains to Oprah how she channels Abraham—”I just relax and quiet my mind,” Esther says. “I usually focus on my breathing, and within a few seconds I feel the energy of Abraham, a collective consciousness.”
Although Oprah doesn’t know what to expect during the actual channeling session, she discovers that the only apparent change with Esther is a slight variation in the tenor and cadence of her speech pattern.
Esther shares with Oprah what she says Abraham can bring to people’s lives. “Everyone gets to create their own reality and Abraham’s not interested in telling us what we should create—they’re only interested in showing how we go about creating what our life path is about,” Esther says.
Quoting directly from The Law of Attraction, Oprah summarizes the basic lessons of Abraham. “Once you understand that all people, circumstances and events are invited into your experience by you, through your thought, you will begin to live your life as you intended when you made the decision to come forth into this physical body,” Oprah says. “And so, an understanding of the powerful Law of Attraction, coupled with an intention to deliberately create your own life experience, will ultimately lead you to the unparalleled freedom that can only come from a complete understanding and application of the art of allowing.”
How to Create Health
March 27, 2008
What happens to our physical bodies is a reflection of our thoughts and expectations. Through negative thinking, we cut ourselves off from all that we can be and have. It is not that certain things are not for us. It is that we do not allow ourselves to have what we truly desire because we cannot imagine how it will manifest itself in our lives. Because we do not allow ourselves to live up to our full potential, we limit our well-being which is our divine right and our legacy.
Because this is an attraction based Universe, physical problems are a manifestation of negative thoughts and feelings within ourselves. It is hard to believe that we create our own problems but we do! In the movie The Secret, there is a segment in which they discuss health. They illustrate that the reason why we have physical problems is because of stress within the body. They also illustrate that we have self-healing powers within us and it is our lack of belief in these abilities that we fall prey to any illness or physical problem.
However, it is difficult to tell someone who is ill that not only did they create their illness but that they are the only one who can reverse it. The distance from sickness to wellness is an emotional journey first which means that you must go there in the mind before you can go there in the body. You must imagine yourself being well to actually be well. As humans we are conditioned to believe that we need to be reliant on others for our well-being. We do not understand that our well-being comes from within us. Your health is not the responsibility of any health practitioner. Your health is your responsibility. Your well-being is your biggest priority. Your life is determined by how you imagine yourself to be beginning right now.
Thinking Positive
March 26, 2008
A lot of the work that I do with my clients, who come to me for Quantum Biofeedback sessions, is I teach them about the law of attraction. The law of attraction, by definition, says that that which is like unto itself is drawn and when you ask it is always given. This means that if you can convince yourself that you can have anything then it has to be yours. The issue is how do you convince yourself that you can have something when you believe that you cannot?
Because the most powerful law in the universe is the law of attraction and because everything is created through thought first, we must allow ourselves to imagine that we can have the well-being that we deserve. A belief is just a thought that you keep thinking and if you have a negative belief you must counteract it with a positive one. It is difficult to begin doing this because your conscious mind will tell you that you are lying to yourself. However, if you are persistent in practicing that you can have something that you want then you begin to feel like you already have it and when that happens that is when it comes into your life.
Affirmations are the best way that I know to change a negative focus into a positive one. My clients constantly ask me to give them affirmations that they can use on a daily basis so I’ve decided to include some of them here on my blog. The word God appears in many of these affirmations. If you do not believe in God, these affirmations can still serve you. The reason why people do not believe in God is because they have been taught, through many religions, that God is outside of them and people believe that there is no God because if there was then God would eliminate the evil from this planet. Through all that I have studied about the law of attraction, I have learned that there is no separation between what is God and what we are because each of us has unlimited power — God force within us — so; therefore, we are God too. The name of Christ also appears because He was a great teacher who revealed the true power of man. We are all special and we have not come here to rely on a God that is outside of us to create our lives — God has given the power of creation to each of us. So we must use it!
Please feel free to use these affirmations and if you have others that you like, please send them to me because I love collecting them.
